Location: On Lochman Lane, a hill on supposedly private property, overlooking downtown LA. Midday, sunny. Two young guys sit in the dirt. There is a bottle of wine on the ground between them, half full. Paul is smoking. Jon is making things out of twigs, little houses.
PAUL
It's beautiful up here.
I missed Los Angeles.
JON
I like the sun.

PAUL
I started writing a novel.
JON
Cool.
PAUL
I just realized I have all these amazing stories.
JON
So you're writing the prequel to Less Than Zero.
PAUL
Heh.
Long pause, drinks.
PAUL
My parents are splitting up.

Location: Workout room.
Jon runs on the treadmill. He doesn't look like he does it that often. A news program plays on the TV.
TV
10 dead in the tiny nation of Luxembourg today, as a ferris wheel collapsed while fully loaded with passengers.
Among the dead, three children, two fathers, five uncles, four aunts, 7 best friends -
Jon turns the TV off. He stares at it.
He gets off the treadmill and starts lifting weights. He turns the TV back on.
TV
...responded immediately but were ill-prepared for such a catastrophe.

Location: A bedroom.
Jon and Laura sitting on the bed. Laura is taking care of him. The sounds of a party filter in through the door.
JON
Aaah, I'm drunk.
LAURA
You're drunk?
Really?
JON
mmhmm.
I saw the weirdest thing on the news today.
About Luxembourg.
LAURA
About Luxembourg?
JON
About the carousel.
Or, not the carousel.
The ferris wheel in the gardens collapsed.
LAURA
Oh, wow.
JON
You don't remember about the ferris wheel?
You don't remember about it.
That's fine.
LAURA
I remember about the ferris wheel.
JON
The news was weird. Five brothers and three fathers and six mothers died. I've never heard them say that on the news. The way she was listing it was like poetry.
LAURA
That sounds weird.
If you're going to be fine, then I'm going to go to sleep.
JON
I'm not going to be fine.
LAURA
Are you going to throw up?
JON
I'm not going to throw up.
LAURA
Then you're going to be fine.
JON
I don't think you remember about the carousel.
I know when you're lying.
I know you very well.
LAURA
I'm going to bed.
Laura starts to leave.
JON
I'm not fine.
I'm not going to be able to sleep if you leave.
You should sleep in this room.
Otherwise I'll stay up all night.
Laura laughs. Jon does not laugh.
Laura sighs, bites her lip, kisses him on the cheek, and leaves.
JON
I'll stay up all night.
I know those times.
Jon falls asleep.

Location: On Lochman Lane. Sunset. Paul and Jon. No drinks this time.
PAUL
The Lakers lost.
JON
Yeah.
PAUL
No team ethic, shit.
My dad was cursing.
I thought he was going to have a heart attack. Because he's so fat now.
Everything he does, I'm absolutely sure he's going to have a heart attack.
I picture him falling down in slow motion.
My mom and I running to him, calling an ambulance that doesn't get there in time.
Like in a movie.
Pause
Do you ever do that?
JON
Do what?
PAUL
Worry?
JON
Sure.

Location: A workout room. Jon runs on a treadmill.
TV
...lending new meaning to the word "intrepid".
Well, that's all in local news.
In world news, the tiny nation of Luxembourg played host to a mass vigil last night. Mourners brought candles. Those who knew the deceased brought mementoes from their time together. Those who didn't know the victims were given paper plates and string and asked to make remembrance masks.
Thousands stood together in silence
As a young man in Los Angeles remembered, last night, having rode the ferris wheel, one hot night.
As a young man in Los Angeles remembered riding the ferris wheel with her one hot night, years later, and at it's apex kissing her, and her not pulling back.
And the ferris wheel seeming to stop moving.
like in a movie.
Jon turns off the TV.
He gets off the treadmill.
He leaves the room.
